Starting Over

Hello! I wanted to write a short note regarding Kerry Massage and the changes taking place. I’ve had some time to think since Spring time and since Covid hit and decided to make some changes to my environment as well as pricing.

This Spring I raised my prices as I haven’t raised them in years and it was time. The second change is I moved my massage location one flight up. It has now taken residence in the space that was previously the yoga space. Still the same address, just upstairs.

I am still following Covid 19 protocals for all of our safety and I’m looking forward to this coming to an end sometime in the next year.

As always, you can reach out if you have any questions. Wishing you all safety and great health and hoping to see you soon!

Peace,

Kerry

A science and an art based on the principle that there are reflex points in the feet that correspond to every gland, organ, and body part.
When gentle pressure and massage are applied to these points the benefits include: stress reduction, improved circulation and purification which in turn revitalizes the energy and balances the whole system. Let me know if you are feeling an imbalance in any part of your body and we will try to balance it thru your feet. It might take up to 3 sessions to achieve full balance. 60 minute session $75, tax inlcuded.

Ear Candling
Ear Candling is a very relaxing, nurturing and restorative treatment. This age-old remedy dating back to ancient Egypt assists in removing impurities as well as enabling the body to rid the ear of excess wax. Hollow paraffin or beeswax cloth candles between 10 and 12 inches long are used, its tapered end gently inserted in the ear. The other end is lit and the burning candle creates a slow vacuum and gentle smoke within the hollow candle that dries and pulls out the toxins. Includes 2 candles per ear as well as a gentle massage to the sinus areas of the face. Helps sinus problems, allergies, hearing difficulties, some chronic headaches, sore throats, swimmers ear and ear aches. $50, tax included.

Kerry Massage Winter 2018 Newsletter

Put your ear down close to your soul and listen hard. -Anne Sexton

Something about this season stops me for moments at a time, allowing me to be still and listen. Aside from the cold and tough weather I try to dwell on the quiet/slowing down part of this season. This is where I focus on recharging my being and envisioning what I want for this new year. So even though this season takes patience, there is no getting around it. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. ~ om

Winter 2018 Specials! (Good through March 20th)

Healing Stone Therapy-smooth stones are heated and placed on the body while hotter stones are used to massage the body. A deeply warming and relaxing experience! $96 for 60 minutes, $133 for 90 minutes. Prices include tax. This treatment is offered in the Healing Space only.

Aromatherapy-Eve Taylor Method-This is a very different treatment and one of my favorites. Gentle, rhythmic strokes specifically meant to clear out stagnation in the lymph system are applied to the back of the legs, entire back, abdominals, feet and face/neck with the aid of aromatherapy oils. The focus is to balance the body’s respiratory, digestion and elimination throughout various parts of the body. This is a gentle and relaxing treatment. $75 for 60 minutes. Price includes tax.

Dry Brushing-An ancient technique used to aid in the skin’s ability to release and remove toxins from the body. With the use of a natural bristled brush, the body is completely brushed using upward strokes towards the heart. This technique has been practiced historically by many cultures with benefits including tighter, smoother, healthier skin with clear pores to detoxify the entire body and help with better absorption of nutrients, cleansing of Lymph system, muscle stimulation, and an increase in electromagnetic energy that permits you to feel energized and invigorated. New brush used with each client so you can continue this health benefit at home. $48 for 20-25 minutes of treatment and brush. *Combine with a 30-minute full body Swedish Massage for $100 total. Price includes tax.

Restorative Yoga-Private-This combination of certain yoga poses supported by props enables the body’s parasympathetic nervous system (referred to as the rest and digest system!) to kick in. This engages a relaxation response in the body which helps to slow breathing and heart rate, reduce stress, release tension and increase the blood flow to vital parts of the body. Restorative Yoga rejuvenates your entire being. It deeply relaxes the body and calms the mind. It will help with flexibility and will enhance your immune system improving your own ability to heal. R.Y. is a great way to release the build-up of stress on a regular basis, especially if done daily. $60 for 60 minutes. Offered at Kerry Yoga Space only. Additional fee for housecalls.

Conscious Breathing is My Anchor.

Kerry Massage Newsletter Winter 2015-2016

Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.                                                                               — Thich Nhat Hạnh

Hello all. It’s been a while. Since my last newsletter almost 2 years ago, things have settled down quite a bit and I’m happy to say that I am back to doing massage therapy on a more full time basis and accepting new clients. I have added teaching group yoga classes at Shiva Shanti Yoga School along with my individual private yoga classes. This coming year I will be teaching my own group classes at the Alpine Community House in Alpine, NJ as well as exploring other yoga opportunities.

This is exciting for me, and a long time coming, because I have always wanted to combine the benefits of both massage therapy and yoga. Now is the time. I’m looking forward to bringing these holistic modalities to my clients this coming year.

Holiday Special!

Gift Certificates are available for regularly priced Massage and Yoga Sessions at $10 Off. Call, text or email if interested by Dec. 26, 2015. I can mail this out to you or you can stop by Kerry Massage and Healing Space to purchase and pick up. Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and Debit accepted as well as checks and cash.

In this newsletter I have included an article by Nadya Andreeva on the benefits of yogic breathing. I hope you will read this and it makes you curious enough to add this to your daily life. If you would like to explore breathing techniques further we can also set up a session including this.

The rhythm and the depth of your breath directly affects the state of your mind and the health of your body. According to yoga and ayurveda, breath is a carrier of Prana, the energy that gives life to the body. No breath, no life and no energy!

 1. Breath = Life. Our energy level depends in a big part on our breath. The fuller you breathe, the more energy you will have. Taking deeper breaths will bring in more oxygen in to the body and improve your energy levels.

2. Less Stress and Better Digestion. Slow deep breaths help to activate the parasympathetic nervous system which is when the body gets the chance to recuperate, regenerate, and heal. It’s very important to help keep a healthy immune system and get out of our “flight or flight state”. Those of you suffering from poor digestion, bloating, or constipation will benefit from learning how to put your body into a “rest and heal” state and activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This is the only state when your body can digest food efficiently.

3. Less Inflammation! There is a lot of talk about how cancer and many diseases can only live in an acidic body. Deep breathing is said to reduce the acidity level of the body making it more alkaline, reducing your risk. It reduces the stress levels which when elevated can increase the acidity levels.

4. More Awareness. The more awareness you have in the present moment, the more likely you are to connect with your intuition or internal teacher. Your body knows how and what to feed itself to be healthy, how much and how often to move, and how much to rest. It is a matter of learning to listen to that voice and understand it. The slower you breathe, the more likely you are to hear that internal teacher.

5. Better Relationships. Most relationships would be better if people were less reactive. Can you imagine if instead of saying something mean, you were able to mentally step back and chill before talking? Wouldn’t that be nice? The state of your mind affects the breath, the reverse is true as well. When you are angry your breath is fast and shortened. When you are relaxed, your breath is slow and complete (hopefully!). The next time you are arguing with someone try taking longer deeper breaths. Notice how that can quickly reduces anger and allow you to look at the situation from a new perspective.

A good thing about breathing: you can do it anywhere and anytime. Even 5 minutes of slow deep conscious breathing once or twice a day can make a huge difference.

Thank you all for your patronage and I look forward to working with you in the coming year!

Peace,

Don’t Wait to Show Your Love

Aside

Kerry Massage April 2013 Newsletter and Specials!

Don’t Wait to Show Your Love

As some of you already know, there was a death in my family a couple of months ago. My sister age 51 died in a car accident leaving her 2 beautiful children for us to raise and move forward with. This has been a trying two months for many reasons, but one thing I am consoled with is that my sister knew how much I loved her and I knew that she loved me too. We had our disagreements at times, but always knew the importance of resolving them and for that I am grateful.

I am telling you this for no other reason than to explain the title and point of this newsletter and the importance of expressing love to all those you truly love. Are those disagreements worth being stubborn about? Anyway, I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but I think this deserves attention. Let it go, work through the disagreement, tell them you love them no matter what. Then, when they are no longer with us and “resting in peace”, hopefully we can be at peace as well. Love to all.

Deep tissue massage is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks and shoulders, and back tightness, although this can be applied anywhere the person is feeling tension, blocked circulation or limited movement. Slower, deeper pressure is applied to break down adhesions with the goal being pain relief as well as restoring normal movement.

Displaced

No inspirations came to me last week as I tried to find something to write about for this newsletter. Even after I got power, although living with candlelight was very interesting, all I could think about were the difficulties that many people on the east coast were experiencing due to Hurricane Sandy. And though more people are coming together to help with supplies and relief, it’s now cold, snowy and some people are completely frustrated. So I will keep this brief and simply express gratitude for what we have and send prayers for those struggling through this challenging time. We will get through this. I wish you all love, patience, faith, hope and peace.

Some Benefits of Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy for Inflammation After Exercise
Research through the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario indicates that massage therapy reduces inflammation of skeletal muscle acutely damaged through exercise. The study found evidence at the cellular level that massage therapy may affect inflammation in a way similar to anti-inflammatory medications. The study provides evidence for the benefits of massage therapy for those with musculoskeletal injuries and potentially for those with inflammatory disease, according to the lead author of the research.
Massage Therapy for Chronic Low Back Pain
Research released in July 2011 expanded on previous studies demonstrating the effectiveness of massage therapy for chronic low back pain. Researchers found that “patients receiving massage were twice as likely as those receiving usual care to report significant improvements in both their pain and function”. The study was conducted over 10 weeks through Group Health Research Institute. Participants had a 60-minute massage once a week for 10 weeks. Massage patients also said they reduced the amount of over the counter anti-inflammatory medications they took. The study compared both relaxation massage and “structural massage” therapy and found no difference in the results from the type of massage given.

Fibromyalgia Syndrome and Massage Therapy

Fibromyalgia Syndrome and Massage Therapy

Fibromyalgia Syndrome affects between 2 and 5 percent of the U.S. population, which is roughly 6 to 15 million people. Most FMS clients are women aged 25 to 50.1 Yet the definition of FMS has a number of variations.2

FMS Symptoms

The range of symptoms for Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) include widespread pain, fatigue, severely disturbed sleep and, all too often, digestive system distress. However, the causes almost always lie elsewhere, and not in the tissues where the pain is being felt.

My objective in helping FMS clients will include any or all of the following:

*   Easing anxiety and encouraging better sleep patterns

*    Deactivating trigger points

*    Improving general circulatory and lymphatic flow

*    Recognizing and helping improve breathing pattern disorders

*    Improving muscular tone, function and balance.

*    Working with compassion and empathy

When working with Fibromyalgia clients I primarily use gentle Swedish style strokes with massage oil or cream and therapeutic grade plant (Aromatherapy) oils. All symptoms are discussed and addressed to get the most out of each session. I may also combine Foot Reflexology to also address pain issues of the body as well as deepen the relaxation experience. For your first session, you may choose to start with 30 minutes, just to see how your body feels later, as you sleep, and how you feel the next day. If the results are positive you can continue with 30 minutes or if you choose, slowly increase the time. Again, you will observe your body’s reactions and at this point decide what amount of time works for you.

Some info you should know

With FMS clients, when massage and movement therapy were compared with relaxation and movement, there were far more benefits in the group receiving both massage and movement therapy. The greatest benefits were noted in areas of mood and depression, as well as in reduced pain levels.3

Disturbed sleep, a symptom of FMS, causes far more problems than fatigue. One of the functions of sleep during its deepest stages is production of the growth hormone (GH). It is also produced during aerobic exercise. GH performs many vital repair and regeneration tasks. Gentle massage therapy is important, but deep tissue work that would contribute to traumatizing tissues should be avoided, because less GH means less or slower healing of tissues.
